PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Gurtej Dhillon assisted on both goals scored by Anis Makaren and Pat Shaughnessy as the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team blanked visiting Buffalo State 2-0 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game at the Cardinals Field House on Friday evening. The Cardinals, who recorded their third consecutive shutout, improve to 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the SUNYAC. The Bengals lost their fifth straight to drop to 5-8-1 and 1-4-1 in the conference.
The Buffalo State defense ensured that the teams would go into the intermission scoreless 6 minutes into the first half when Brandon Levine was stymied at point-blank range by a Bengal back sliding across the wide-open goal to deflect the shot. Levine collected the rebound but his second shot went wide.
But in the 77th minute, the Cardinals broke through as Makaren flicked a header for his team-leading eighth goal into the lower-left corner off a Dhillon free kick from the right side. Then less then a minute later, Shaughnessy headed in his fourth goal off a cross from Dhillon.
Plattsburgh dominated the game in shots (17-4), shots on goal (7-0) and corner kicks (8-2). The Bengals didn't get off a shot until the 25th minute when Steve Orfanos's right-footed blast went wide.
Freshman goalkeeper Andy Heighington chalked up his fifth career shutout to improve to 10-2-1 for Plattsburgh. Ryan Wiehl came in for injured starter Brian Dudek in the 49th minute and made three sprawling saves to keep the Bengals close.
