Susan Hutchins was a trailblazer in the history of women’s athletics at Plattsburgh State, as she became the College’s first-ever female All-American. 

She finished eighth in the 800-meter run at the 1988 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 2:15.93, and by virtue of her finish, she earned All-America recognition. 

Susan finished her career as the program record holder in 13 events, six of which came during indoor season. As a result of her success, the Malone, N.Y., native was named the Plattsburgh State Female Athlete of the Year in 1987-88.

Where is she now

Susan, who was raised in Malone, N.Y., has lived in northern New York her entire life. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in geography from SUNY Plattsburgh and subsequently returned to school at Plattsburgh for her Master of Science in teaching after discovering a passion for being an educator. She has taught for more than 20 years, the last eight of which have been as a kindergarten teacher at Rouses Point Elementary in Rouses Point, N.Y.

She currently lives in Peru, N.Y., with her fiancé, Charlie Poirier, and his two children, Cooper (17) and Kallie (14). Aside from helping young minds grow, some of her greatest accomplishments in her professional life are writing and receiving grants to enrich the academic and cultural experiences of the students at Rouses Point Elementary.
