Maher was a standout athlete for both baseball and basketball. In baseball, he was voted Most Valuable Player during the 1973 and ’74 seasons. Those same seasons, Maher served as a team captain as well. At the time of his induction, he was tied for most career home runs (5) and he belted three doubles as a freshman against Potsdam. Maher finished his baseball career batting .338.
As a three-year basketball player, Maher played 61 games with more than 300 career points. During his senior season, he scored a career-high 128 points. Maher received the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
Immediately following graduation, Maher became baseball’s head coach for the 1974-75 season. Maher won his first two games as a coach with a doubleheader sweep against Potsdam. The Cardinals would go on to beat Saint Michael’s College, Vermont, New Paltz, Clarkson and Potsdam again.
In 1978, he was given the Alumnus of the Year award. Maher continued working as a teacher, educational administrator and benefactor of less fortunate and troubled youth.
