Dr. Merritt F. Spear has been the face of Plattsburgh State sports medicine for more than 30 years. In that time, he spent 15 years as the director of health services at Plattsburgh State. At the time of his induction, Spear was the director of sports medicine and physician to the college’s athletic teams. He held this same position for the Empire State Games. Spear was a member of Medical Services for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

He has served as chairman of Medical Services for the World Cup and World Championships in luge and bobsled while sitting as sports medicine chairman for the U.S. Bobsled Association. Spear graduated from the University of Vermont and was a colonel in the Medical Corps of the Vermont Army National Guard.
