Dodge is a posthumous inductee whose passion for running extended far beyond his time as a Plattsburgh State student-athlete.

He earned All-American honors on three occasions. In 1975, he garnered All-American accolades with a seventh-place finish in cross country. That same year, Dodge became the first Plattsburgh State track and field All-American with a sixth-place finish in the six-mile run at the NCAA Track and Field Championships for outdoor track and field. He also received an All-American nod after finishing fifth in the 10,000-meters during the 1976 outdoor track and field season. Dodge held the school record in the 10,000-meter run for 35 years until it was broken in 2011 and still ranks second all-time.

Dodge was named to the All-SUNYAC Cross Country First Team in 1974 and 1975 and earned admission into the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame in 1976. He was also the captain of the Track and Field Teams from 1974-76.

Date of Induction into Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame:

After Plattsburgh:

Brian served as a high school health education teacher and a driver’s education teacher for more than 31 years. He also spent more than 20 years of his life as a cross country coach. Brian was also a member of the Genesee Valley Harriers, a running club located in Rochester, N.Y. He also went all over the country to compete on the Veteran team. In the winter months, Brian competed in cross country ski races and participated in snowshoe races in the Empire State Games. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carol, his daughter, Breann, his mother, Stella and sisters, Marcia and Lisa.

Carol Dodge:

“Brian was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was passionate about running and was always there to help students, friends or anyone who wanted to improve in the sport or to begin running. He was very humble and knowledgeable and spent hours researching everything about running.”

“Brian was a natural leader and highly-regarded and respected by all. He was a storyteller and would share stories about his childhood days in a very entertaining way. Past students would still come to the house to see Brian and ask for advice about life or about their running. Brian was very kind and honest with his approach and served as a friend to all.”

Coach Howard Hammonds:

“I coached some very outstanding athletes during my three years at Plattsburgh State and none were more enjoyable than Brian. He was always dependable, never complained and was a true leader by example. We stayed close over the years and I truly miss him.”
