John Flynn Named Assistant Softball Coach

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.John Flynn, who has coached baseball and softball at all levels for 20 years, begins his first season as an assistant softball coach at Plattsburgh State in 2017, as announced by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

"We are so excited that John has joined our softball program," eighth-year head coach Stephanie Conroy said. "He will add a lot to the team both on and off the field. I look forward to another great year of Cardinal Softball with a great new assistant by my side."

Flynn, who worked with the team during its non-traditional season in the fall, most recently led the Peru High School softball program in 2015 and 2016. He also coached the Clinton Mariners for five years and currently serves as their vice president of baseball operations.

In addition, Flynn serves as the youth director for the Town of Peru, a position he has held for 20 years. In that role, he oversees programming for more than 300 youths.

Flynn competed as a varsity baseball student-athlete for four seasons at the University of Central Florida, earning Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference honors in 1982 as a pitcher. A workhorse on the mound, Flynn currently ranks fourth in UCF program history in career complete games with 15. In 1981, he was named the team's Most Valuable Pitcher and Rookie of the Year.

"I would like to thank Coach Conroy and Mike Howard for giving me this great opportunity to be a part of one of the premier programs in all of the Northeast," Flynn said. "I hope my knowledge, experience and in-game management skills can help our team reach our goal of becoming SUNYAC champions."

Plattsburgh State, which qualified for the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament as the No. 2 seed and went 26-17 overall (13-5 SUNYAC) last year, opens up its 2017 season in Florida from March 11-18 as a part of its annual spring break trip.
