PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon at the E. Glenn Giltz Auditotium on the campus of Plattsburgh State, the vast majority of the Plattsburgh State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics convened to look back and celebrate another spectacular year of Cardinal athletics. Six student-athletes received major awards at the annual Plattsburgh State Athletics Senior Recognition and Awards Ceremony.
In addition to the recognition of the Plattsburgh State individual and team champions of the last year, the newest inductees to Chi Alpha Sigma and the recipients of the Dr. Richard D. Semmler Award were announced. The evening ended with the announcement of the senior achievement awards and the athletes of the year – both awards which are voted on annually by the Plattsburgh State coaches.
One of the best track & field seasons ever by a Plattsburgh State student-athlete yielded 2014-15 Female Athlete of the Year honors for junior
Jess Huber. The Plattsburgh, N.Y., product amassed a laundry list of achievements during the 2014-15 indoor and outdoor track & field campaigns – none of which was bigger than her USTFCCCA All-American laurel after finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships. Huber also made he cut for the 60-meter dash at the national meet and finished 11
th in that event. Through the year, Huber was named the SUNYAC Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 60 and 200-meter dashes at the SUNYAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Huber is the owner of no less than five school records and has racked up four SUNYAC Athlete of the Week, two ECAC Co-Athlete of the Week and one USTFCCCA Division III Athlete of the Week Honorable Mention awards in 2014-15 alone.
Having made a name for himself as one of the best attack men not just in the SUNYAC but the country, Brendan Damm was named the 2014-15 Male Athlete of the Year. The native of Montauk, N.Y., capped off his 2014 campaign by being named an Honorable Mention All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) by way of his SUNYAC-leading point (68) and goal (51) totals. He finished 2014 ranked 39
th in NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse in goals per game (2.83).
The honors for
Brittany Marshall are almost too numerous to list and the Malone, N.Y., product capped off her Plattsburgh State athletic career by being named the Female Senior Achievement Award winner. A two-sport athlete, Marshall excelled both on the basketball court and on the softball diamond during her four-year collegiate career. On the hardwood, Marshall helped lead the Cardinals to their first-ever SUNYAC regular season and SUNYAC Tournament crowns before advancing to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament for the first time in program history in 2013-14. A two-time SUNYAC First Team selection and the 2014 SUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, Marshall departs as the program's all-time leader in assists (498), three-point field goals (184) and ranks fourth all-time on the program's scoring charts with 1,247 points. While sporting a softball uniform, Marshall laid claim to such honors as SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, All-SUNYAC Second Team, All-SUNYAC First Team, NFCA All-Northeast Region Third Team and NCAA Division III All-Region Team. A four-year starter at shortstop, her name is littered throughout the Cardinals' record book as she ranks second on the Cardinals' all-time charts in runs (123), hits (164) and stolen bases (77).
As a result of his play on the ice and his commitment to excellence off of it, senior
Brandon Beadow of the men's ice hockey team was chosen as the Male Senior Achievement Award winner. A final-year man out of Kapuskasing, Ontario, Beadow patrolled the Cardinals' blue line admirably for four seasons and received All-SUNYAC Second Team and All-SUNYAC Tournament Team accolades after helping Plattsburgh State pick up its 22
nd SUNYAC crown with a 2-1 win over Oswego State on March 7. Led by Beadow, the Cardinals' defensive corps ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering just over two goals per outing. A three-year team captain, Beadow ran the team's study hall and managed many of the squad's community service events throughout the years.
Amanda Gadway of the women's track & field team was honored as the female recipient of the Dr. Richard D. Semmler Award which is given annually to the male and female graduating seniors who possess the highest cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Gadway, who hails from Malone, N.Y., is in the process of capping off a remarkable track & field career for the Cardinals. The senior has starred in the throwing circle for the past four years and has qualified for each SUNYAC Championship meet and every ECAC Championship meet since her first outdoor season. A 2014 inductee into the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society, Gadway holds school records in the hammer and discus throws (outdoor) as well as in the weight throw (indoor). She was also named the 2015 SUNYAC Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the year after winning both the hammer and shot put at the outdoor championship meet and is the owner of a 3.74 GPA in Childhood Education grades 1-6.
Michael Cassidy of the men's ice hockey team took home the Dr. Richard D. Semmler Award on the men's side after registering an impressive 3.95 GPA. The West Seneca, N.Y., product achieved All-SUNYAC Second Team acclaim in 2014-15 after helping the Cardinals capture their 22
nd SUNYAC title with a 2-1 win over Oswego State. With the win, Plattsburgh State made it to the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Tournament for the first time since 2012. Along the way, Cassidy emerged as a breakout star for the Cardinals' offense, registering a team-best 12 goals and 26 points.
Not only did the Plattsburgh State athletics department announce its major award winners on Sunday, but it also inducted a total of 16 individuals into the ranks of Chi Alpha Sigma – the National Athlete Honor Society. Student-athletes who are inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma must be of junior standing, possess a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher, exhibit good sportsmanship and receive the endorsement of their head coach. This year's inductees include:
